Structural Bridge Design and 3D-Printed Prototyping
This student project, led by Dr. Amanda Bao, integrates structural engineering analysis, computer-aided design (CAD), and additive manufacturing to provide a hands-on approach to bridge design and structural engineering education.
Students use SAP2000 to develop and analyze the bridge structural system, evaluate structural behavior and load paths, and refine the design based on engineering principles. The structural design is then translated into detailed CAD models, allowing individual bridge components, connections, and assembly features to be developed for fabrication.
The final bridge components are 3D printed and assembled into a physical structural model, connecting computational analysis and digital design with hands-on fabrication. The project provides students with practical experience in structural analysis, CAD modeling, 3D printing, assembly, and engineering problem-solving while demonstrating the complete process from structural concept and analysis to physical prototype.
